While the proper summer rains are still to come, recent showers have started the ‘Green Season’ transformation process in our reserve. Some areas have already started changing from the dull browns and beiges of winter, to lush luminous greens. Even the tops of the knob thorn trees are now in full bloom! The colours are bringing everything back to life, and with the rain we have had so far, the Msunduze River has started to flow. Although it’s not constantly flowing, it is such a treat to see the river inflow as it attracts all animals to come for a drink in front of the lodge. It has also attracted some very special types of birds such as Step Eagles, as well as the very rare Broad-billed rollers which are migratory birds that have now started to come back on the banks of river after a cool winter. Even the tortoises have “come out their shells” to enjoy the wet weather! It just goes to show, there’s never a bad time to visit the Zululand bush.
