It was football to some and soccer to others but whatever you call it the general feeling is that the 2010 ‘World Cup’ was a huge success for South Africa. I even wore a distinctive yellow Bafana-Bafana shirt for a New Years Eve party to mark the passing of 2010!

The sound of the vuvuzela may have briefly taken the place of the sounds of the natural world. However the sounds of the wild are as vivid as ever. I have just returned from, a warm and at times very wet, January trip to KZN.

This trip was different, more of a holiday, as I was travelling with my wife and my parents. No holiday is complete without a trip to the coast so we stayed a few nights in St Lucia. This preceded their first safari into Hluhluwe & Imfolozi game reserves with me acting as their guide!

To read more about ‘what we did on our holiday’ I have added to our safari articles. St Lucia provides a perfect base to explore the Elephant coast and, the second of the provinces World Heritage sites, the Isimangaliso Wetland Park and wetland it was at times!

Through the storm clouds there is always sunshine and whatever the weather there is always a sense of wonder in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. It’s a place that never fails to disappoint even a regular visitor.
